Recreating Mona Lisa

Sometimes on our girlfriend road trips,
we like to include an art project.

Recently for Girls Fun Weekend, Part 2
Gail gifted us with Mona Lisa cabinet dolls
from the Outlet Store of Victoria Trading Co.

One glance and we knew we had to transform her!

Instead of recreating drab Mona Lisa, we transformed her.

Drab Mona Lisa was painted with primer.

Nora graciously offered to paint our individual dolls
to resemble each of us.

Each of us had our own design ideas.
With lace, fabric, paint, pearls, rhinestones, feathers,
decoupaged images, butterflies and miscellaneous trims,
we transformed her.

I knew immediately I wanted mine to
wear a Marie Antoinette French costume.

I created a wire wide-bustle.  Wrapped the bustle
with paper-mache and wired it around her waist.

Next, I begin cutting and creating various layers of
French-style fabrics for her dress, with an under slip
of scrim to poof her dress.

At Junk Jubilee we bought vintage salt shaker metal lids.
The vendor had a huge bowl of these lids.
He thought someone would find a purpose for them.
He asked us how we planned on using them.
We all said "hats of course".

For each of our hats we used one of these lids as a hat base.
It works great to secure decorations through the holes!

What a fun project!

Girlfriends Gathering Christmas 2018

Welcome to our Girlfriends Gathering Christmas 2018

(L-R/F-B: Marj, Karla, Beth, Tami (me), Nora, Kim, Lee & Gail - Lindy & Corrine not shown)

Thank goodness for Marj's height and long arms
as she was able to grab a group selfie of us.

This wonderful group of women have become friends through
the connection of Karla's Cottage 2011 Bird Song

These kindred friendships have been life-changing to us!
So often our lives can be swallowed up in Life itself.
As friends it is important to connect and
nurture one another in time well spent -
to create and inspire one another -
to lift up one another -
and to share good food!

So, in 2013 Girlfriends Gathering began.

I try about every 3-4 month to host at my home our gathering.
Everyone brings food/drinks for our potluck meal.
We share from early morning to late night.
We'll create beauty in artsy projects.
And...we nurture our cherished friendships!

Here's a peek at our recent 2018 Christmas Girlfriends Gathering

The blurry flash of red hair is Corrine joining our group selfie.
Corrine was only 5 years old when Girlfriends Gathering
began.  She sure is growing up!

Many of us had hopeful intentions on participating in our
Christmas Diorama Swap, but only Gail and Lee found time to complete theirs.
Naturally they won one another's dioramas...

Lee created this adorable handmade paper house tealight diorama!

Gail created this darling Winter Animals diorama with fairy lights!

Recently Girlfriends Gathering
gathered for another craft day and
birthday celebrations!

Since everyone has a birthday sometime this year,
I had a bouquet of Birthday flowers waiting for everyone to take home

Some of us are celebrating milestone birthdays this year -
10, 40 and three of us turning 60!

Happy Birthday Rinne!
Happy Birthday Marj!
Happy Birthday Karla, Nora and Me!
When you're turning 60, you can either claim it or try to ignore it...we're claiming it!
I made each of us turning 60 a special '60' tiara...

I offered two projects and some brought their own projects to work.
I did not get pics of everyone's projects (sorry!).
I've been cleaning out my 'STASH' and shared old clipboards and miscellaneous lids
for creating...

Happy Birthday to these
AMAZING FRIENDS!
